Terms of Service
Last updated: July 12, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and FormatDog ("FormatDog," "we," "us," or "our") governing your use of formatdog.com and every tool, page, and feature on it (collectively, the "Service"). By visiting formatdog.com or using any tool on it, you agree to these Terms. If anything here is unclear, our Contact page is the fastest way to reach us.
1. Acceptance of these Terms
By accessing or using the Service in any way — including simply loading a page or selecting a file in one of our tools — you agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. If you are using the Service on behalf of an organization, you're confirming you have the authority to bind that organization to these Terms.
2. What the Service is
FormatDog provides free, browser-based utilities for working with PDFs, images, documents, and related file formats — merging, splitting, compressing, converting, signing, redacting, and more — plus a set of general-purpose calculators. Every tool runs using JavaScript and WebAssembly directly inside your own browser. Files you select are processed on your own device and are not uploaded to our servers; see our Privacy Policy and Transparency page for the full technical explanation and how to verify it yourself.
3. No account, and what that means
The Service does not require you to register, create an account, or provide any personal information to use it. Because there's no account system, there's also nothing for us to suspend or delete on your behalf in the traditional sense — access to the Service is provided on an as-available basis to anyone who visits the site, subject to these Terms.
4. Eligibility
You must be capable of forming a legally binding contract to use the Service. The Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, consistent with our Privacy Policy. If you are under the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction, you should only use the Service with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
5. Your files and content
You retain full ownership of, and all rights to, any file or content you select or create using the Service. Because those files are processed entirely on your own device and are never transmitted to us, we make no claim of any kind to their contents, and we have no ability to access, view, retain, or delete them — that's entirely under your control, on your own device.
You are solely responsible for the files and content you process using the Service, and for making sure you have the legal right to use, edit, sign, redact, or convert them. Don't use the Service to process content that infringes someone else's rights, that you don't have permission to handle, or that is otherwise unlawful.
6. Acceptable use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and in a way that doesn't infringe the rights of, or restrict or inhibit the use and enjoyment of the Service by, anyone else. Specifically, you agree not to:
- Use the Service to create, process, or distribute content that is illegal, fraudulent, or infringes someone else's intellectual property, privacy, or other rights;
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service, its underlying infrastructure, or other users' devices;
- Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service, or attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or overburden it (for example, through automated scraping, denial-of-service attempts, or excessive bulk automated requests);
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the Service, except to the extent applicable law expressly permits this despite this restriction, or with respect to code we've already published as open source (see our Transparency page);
- Use any part of the Service to build a directly competing product by systematically copying our tool descriptions, layout, or content;
- Misrepresent your affiliation with FormatDog, or use our name, logo, or branding without our written permission.
7. No professional advice
The Service — including every calculator, converter, and utility on this site — is provided for general, informational, and productivity purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes financial, tax, legal, medical, or other professional advice, and you should not rely on it as a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who understands your specific circumstances.
This applies in particular to our financial calculators (loan and mortgage payment, debt payoff, compound interest, net worth, budget, and paycheck estimators), which produce estimates based on the numbers and assumptions you enter and, where applicable, on simplified, general tax figures that may not reflect the latest law or your individual situation. It also applies to our redaction, legal-document, and similar tools, which help you edit and manipulate documents but do not verify legal sufficiency, evaluate accuracy, or replace review by a qualified professional. Each of these tools' own FAQ section includes additional, specific caveats — please read them before relying on any output for an important decision.
8. Intellectual property
The Service itself — its design, layout, original text, graphics, logo, and the FormatDog name — is owned by FormatDog and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms don't grant you any right to use our branding, trademarks, or site design outside of normal use of the Service (for example, viewing and using the tools as intended).
Portions of the Service are built using third-party, open-source software libraries, each governed by its own license. Using the Service does not transfer any ownership of those libraries to you, and your use of any code we've open-sourced ourselves is governed by the license under which we've published it, not by these Terms. See our Transparency page for a full list of the open-source software this site is built on.
9. Advertising
The Service is free to use and may display advertising, including through Google AdSense, to help cover hosting and development costs. Advertisements are served by third parties and may use cookies as described in our Privacy Policy. We don't control the specific content of third-party ads and aren't responsible for the products, services, or websites they link to.
10. Availability and changes to the Service
We aim to keep the Service available and working well, but we don't guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free. We may add, remove, modify, or temporarily or permanently discontinue any tool or feature at any time, with or without notice, and without liability to you for doing so.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. This includes, without limitation, any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement, and any warranty that the Service will be accurate, reliable, uninterrupted, secure, or free of errors or harmful components. You use the Service, and rely on any output it produces, entirely at your own risk.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, FormatDog and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, revenue, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Service — even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages. To the extent any liability cannot be excluded under applicable law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or the Service will not exceed the amount you have paid us to use the Service in the twelve months before the claim arose, which, given the Service is free to use, will typically be zero.
Some jurisdictions don't allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or damages, so some of the limitations above may not apply to you. In that case, our liability will be limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law.
13. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold FormatDog and its operators harmless from any claim, liability, damage, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to your violation of these Terms, your misuse of the Service, or content you process or create using the Service.
14. Termination
We reserve the right to restrict or block access to the Service, for any individual visitor or more broadly, at our discretion — for example, in response to abuse, attempted attacks on the Service, or violation of these Terms. Because the Service doesn't use accounts, this would typically take the form of technical measures (such as blocking access from a particular source) rather than an account suspension. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification) will continue to apply.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which FormatDog operates, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except to the extent that mandatory consumer-protection laws of your own jurisdiction apply and cannot be waived by agreement.
16. Dispute resolution
If you have a concern or dispute about the Service, we'd genuinely like the chance to resolve it directly — please reach out through our Contact page first, and we'll do our best to sort things out informally. If a dispute can't be resolved that way, it will be handled in the courts of competent jurisdiction as described in the "Governing law" section above.
17. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid under applicable law, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining Terms remain in full force and effect.
18. Entire agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and FormatDog regarding your use of the Service, and supersede any prior agreements between you and FormatDog on this subject.
19. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example as new tools are added or existing ones change. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. We encourage you to review this page occasionally.
